Internships Guide

Your comprehensive guide to finding and securing internships as an international student in the US.

CPT & OPT Basics

As an F-1 student, you have two main options for internships: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). CPT is for internships that are integral to your curriculum and requires course enrollment. OPT provides 12 months of work authorization, with STEM majors eligible for a 24-month extension. Understanding these options early helps you plan your academic and career journey.

Start planning for internships at least 6 months in advance to ensure you have time for authorization processing.

Timeline & Planning

Summer internship recruitment often begins in the fall semester. Some competitive programs open applications as early as August. Once you receive an offer, you'll need time to process your work authorization (2-3 weeks for CPT, 3 months for OPT). Consider housing, transportation, and other logistics well in advance.

Create a timeline working backwards from your intended internship start date to ensure you complete all necessary steps on time.

Program Fact

STEM OPT extension allows for up to 36 months of total work experience (12 months OPT + 24 months extension).
