Travel Guide

Your comprehensive guide to traveling as an international student in the US.

Essential Travel Documents

When traveling as an international student, you need several important documents: a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date), valid F-1 visa, current I-20 with travel signature (signed within the last year), proof of enrollment, and financial documents. Make copies of all documents and keep them separate from the originals.

Get your I-20 signed by your DSO at least 2-3 weeks before international travel. The signature is valid for one year.

Travel Tips

Planning Your Trips

Plan your travels around academic breaks to avoid missing classes. Consider visa processing times if you need to renew. Book flights with flexible change policies, as academic schedules can change. If traveling within the US, carry your passport, I-20, and proof of enrollment, even for domestic flights.

Sign up for airline price alerts and student travel websites to find the best deals on flights.

Understanding Restrictions

Be aware of travel restrictions based on your visa status. First-year students can't enter the US more than 30 days before their program start date. If your visa expires while in the US, you can stay as long as your I-20 is valid, but you'll need to renew the visa if you travel internationally.

Check travel advisories and visa requirements for any countries you plan to visit, including layover countries.

Safety Fact

Many universities offer travel registration systems to help locate and assist students during emergencies abroad.

International Travel Tips

When traveling internationally, arrive at the airport early for additional security screening. Keep your DSO's contact information handy. Be prepared to show your return ticket and explain your student status. During breaks, you can travel to other countries, but ensure all your documents are in order for re-entering the US.

Save your DSO's emergency contact number and your school's international student office number in your phone.
